The job interview process can be expensive and confusing for employers and job seekers alike. Candidates often invest 5–10 hours preparing for a job interview, as well as travel, unpaid leave and clothing costs. The cost of attending an interview in the UK averages £42 and rises to nearly £100 for those aged 16-24, mainly due to a lack of interview-appropriate clothing and footwear.
There are now 32% more unemployed people per vacancy in the UK compared to 2024 (2.5 in 2026 vs 1.9 in 2024), which has increased costs on both sides. Employers are receiving 280 applications per role, and candidates must apply to more job opportunities to land a first interview, resulting in a hiring process that now averages 56 days.
In this report, we examine job interview data spanning candidate experience, employer communication, and hiring outcomes. Our analysis draws on trusted public sources (listed in the references section) alongside internal survey data to build a comprehensive picture of the current hiring landscape.

Screening, Social Media & Employer Evaluation
Employers are able to access more information about potential hires through their online presence. Many firms will assess LinkedIn profiles as well as other social media platforms as part of their initial screening. An employer's first impression is now often formed online, highlighting the growing importance of maintaining an up-to-date LinkedIn account and reviewing posts on other social media platforms. Some now choose to make accounts private to keep their personal lives separate from their corporate ones.

Many recruiters now use AI to screen candidates, aid hiring decisions and help with video interviews. And many applicants now use AI for Applicant Tracking System screening, cover letters, and, in some cases, to automate the entire application process.
